Harmful chemicals found in food samples from city markets

Fungus, non-permitted colour and non-permissible particles were found in food samples such as turmeric powder, black pepper and masoor dal lifted from various city markets by Prevention of Food Adulteration (PFA) department.

Officials from PFA department said they have found un-permitted colour (metanil yellow), fungus and harmful chemicals in samples of turmeric powder, Kali Mirch, Masoor dal, samples of which were lifted from various markets in the Walled city area last week.

They said cases will be registered against traders from whose premises the samples were lifted.

He added that department of PFA should work to fully eliminate adulteration in food items which affects the health of common man.

Meanwhile, teams from Prevention of Food Adulteration department on Thursday conducted raids in various areas in east and north-east Delhi and lifted samples of milk and paneer.

"Samples of pasteurized toned milk, toned milk, double toned milk, polypack double toned milk, mixed milk and paneer were taken. The samples were immediately sent for analysis. The report is awaited," said an official.

Health minister A K Walia said the raids were conducted as part of efforts to punish those involved in adulteration.

Walia said he has instructed the PFA department to submit the results of test of milk and milk products at the earliest and take appropriate action against the adulterers.

He further instructed the department to keep strict vigil and lift samples regularly.
