A high-level meeting of senior officials of the police, HUDA, PWD and Municipal Corporation was held here today to find solutions to the traffic congestions in the city.

Various issues were discussed to ensure that there was smooth movement of traffic throughout the day and pedestrians did not face problems, sources said.

Presiding over the meeting, police commissioner Surjeet Singh Deswal said the traffic congestions were mainly due to narrow exit points and a proposal to widen the points had been prepared by NHAI.

He directed the authorities to erect traffic lights at crossings and make the already installed traffic lights functional, the sources said.

HUDA administrator Nitin Yadav said HUDA would provide an additional strip of land from the green belt to widen the exit points and service lanes.

He also said that a plan to construct an underpass at IFFCO chowk was in the pipeline.

Deswal expressed the need to construct more foot over-bridges between Rajiv Chowk and Kherki Duala as 57 fatal accidents were reported on this stretch in 2010 in which pedestrians were either killed or injured while crossing the road.

The police commissioner said there was need for more number of toll gates to overcome the problem of long queues of traffic at the toll bridge.

He said the NHAI should provide parking space to the trailers which are often parked on the highway near the toll plaza and thus cause obstruction to the traffic.
