A two-fold hike has been made in tuition fees for under-graduate and post-graduate courses in government medical colleges and university from the current academic session by the Uttar Pradesh government.

"As per the order issued by principal secretary medical education department, fee being charged in under-graduate and post-graduate courses has been hiked by two times," officials said here today.

As per the order, from the current academic session Rs 36,000 will be charged for MBBS and BDS courses as against Rs 18,000 being charged till now.

The hostel fees has been hiked to Rs 300 per month, besides students will be required to pay Rs 200 as fixed charges against electricity.

Similarly, fees for BAMS (Ayurveda), BUMS (Unani) and BHMS (Homoeopathy) students has been fixed at Rs 19,000, they said.

For MD and MS students, annual fee has been fixed at Rs 42,000, whereas post-graduate students of Ayurveda, Unani and Homoeopathy streams will have to shell Rs 24,000, they said.

Though the post-graduate students will continue to get free hostel facility, they would be required to pay Rs 500 against electricity changes, they said.

Candidates of reserved category will be required to pay 50 per cent of the tuition fees, they said.

"The decision to hike the tuition fees was taken as the structure was not revised from the last nine years. The last fee revision was done in the year 2000," an official said.
