Himachal opts for digitally-empowered education

Classrooms to get K-yan, a multimedia alternative to blackboard teaching

GN Bureau | June 3, 2013

Himachal Pradesh will be leveraging IL&FS’ K-yan, a high-tech multimedia tool, to power education in the state. K-yan comes with a smart board and the set will be distributed by Iris Computers Limited.

The tool will be used to replicate blackboard teaching digitally. The device has been created integrating several digital electronic devices like a personal computer with high speed processing capability, large data storage (160 GB) facility, high speed internet connectivity, DVD/VCD/ACD MP3 capability, TV Tuner Card and a high quality projector (2800 lumens) with capability of projecting large format images (over 300 inches) onto a smart interactive board. The machine will eliminate writing by hand by the teachers with graphic options enabling teachers to work with words, numbers and illustrations. A portable device that is completely interactive, it will also help students and teachers both to become tech-friendly.

The state government has ordered 3,000 units, for which the bill stands at Rs 30 crore.

IL&FS Education will train teachers in the content as well as in operating the device. Operating K-yan requires no prior hardware/software knowledge as it is an integrated unit with no inter-connection cords. Operator training time is reduced to few hours. K-yan also has four Hi-Speed external USB ports which facilitate connectivity to Printer, Scanner etc. The device can keep record of the class room teaching , email required data to students and order hard copies to be printed. In places with erratic or non-existent electrical supply K-yan can be powered either through a solar panel, UPS or a car battery.
