Demanding 100 percent wage hike would continue as the Powerloom Cloth Manufacturers Association

PTI | September 13, 2011

The indefinite strike by power loom job workers in Coimbatore and Tirupur demanding 100 per cent wage hike would continue as the Powerloom Cloth Manufacturers Association (PCMA) declined to to concede to the demand.

The seventh round of tripartite talks, headed by district collectors of Coimbatore and Tirupur on Tuesday with PCMA and workers representatives failed to reach any agreement, sources said.

The PCMA agreed for a hike of 10 per cent only, as against the demand of 100 per cent increase in the wages. The strike entered 15th day Tuesday.

There was a production loss of Rs 36 crore a day due to the strike, which totally produce 1.20 lakh metres of fabrics daily.

The workers were demanding a 100 per cent hike in their wages, ranging from the prevailing Rs two to Rs 5.50 per metre, as the earlier wage pact ended in August last, Veluasamy, president, Coimbatore and Tirupur powerloom job workers association told PTI, after the talks.

The CPMA sources said that they have offered to pay a 10 per cent hike in the wages, since they were incurring huge loss due to increased cotton and yarn prices in the intervening period. Though, the prices had come down recently, it had not percolated down the profit margin, they said.
