J&K spending Rs 2,921 cr to build roads

Work on under Prime Minister's Reconstruction Programme (PMRP)

With an aim to improve road connectivity in the state, Jammu and Kashmir government is constructing eight major inter-regional highways and inter-district roads at a cost of Rs 2921 crore under Prime Minister's Reconstruction Programme (PMRP).

"Eight major inter-district roads and inter-regional highways are being constructed in J&K under PMPR at a cost of Rs 2921.88 cr in order to strengthen the communication lines in the state", a senior official of Roads and Buildings (R&B) Ministry said.

While work on three major roads are in progress under PMPR by the state government at a cost of Rs 865.85 cr, five other roads at a cost of Rs 2056.03 cr are being constructed by Border Road Organisation (BRO) under central sector.

Giving details, 84-kms Moghal road connecting Kashmir region's Shopian with Jammu division's Poonch district, is under construction at a cost of Rs 639.85 cr, he said adding the road would be completed by March 2011 and so far Rs 310.40 cr has been spent.

Similarly, Khanbal-Pahalgam road is almost completed and Rs 110 cr has been spent, he said.

The BRO is also upgrading Srinagar-Baramulla-Uri National highway at Rs 312.41 Crores and Rs 254.32 have so far been spent on it, he said.
