Kerala CM flays Govt, Judiciary on Bhopal gas tragedy verdict

Court verdict had brought "disgrace" to Indian judiciary

Kerala chief minister V S Achuthanandan today deplored the Centre's role in handling the Bhopal gas tragedy case and said that the court verdict had brought "disgrace" to Indian judiciary.

Both government and the judiciary were responsible for the judgement by a Bhopal court that allowed top officials of the Union Carbide Factory to go scot-free, Achuthanandan told reporters here.

"The court order has brought disgrace to Indian judiciary," the veteran CPI-M leader said.

The Bhopal gas tragedy case and court judgement should be a lesson for India while dealing with American multi-national companies and also on the liability issue under the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal, he added.

More than two decades after the world's worst industrial disaster left more than 15,000 dead, former Union Carbide India Chairman Keshub Mahindra and six others were sentenced to two years imprisonment by a court in a judgement that has come under fire from civil rights activists and political parties.
