The B S Yeddyurappa-led BJP government in Karnataka has scraped through with a majority on the floor of the assembly today after the second trust vote. The government found support from 106 MLAs while the opposition could muster only 100 votes.

The government had come under fire from all quarters for the hurried trust vote on Monday from which the assembly speaker had controversially supended 16 MLAs from voting.

The majority was declared today after a head count of the MLAs voting.

The Congress had earlier mulled a boycott of the trust vote. It had earlier demanded that the speaker K G Bopaiah allow a debate on the issue in the house. The speaker had declined.

The opposition had also registered for a plea to postpone the session admitting the motion of confidence.

"This session has been specifically convened on the direction of the Governor to conduct the trust vote and it cannot be postponed," Speaker K G Bopaiah declared when opposition Congress leader Siddaramaiah demanded postponing of the motion till the High Court pronounced its verdict on a batch of petitions filed by 16 MLAs challenging their disqualification.

Yeddyurappa later moved a one-line motion -- "This House expresses confidence in the government led by B S Yeddyurappa".

The Speaker put the motion to vote and all the BJP members supported it by voice vote and Siddaramaiah demanded a division of votes, which was accepted.

The House began head count with the members from the treasury benches.
