Maha to bring white paper on malnutrition deaths

State health department mulling a committee of MLAs to monitor situation

PTI | August 1, 2011

Government would table a white paper on the malnutrition deaths in the state, Maharashtra women and child development minister Varsha Gaikwad said in the legislative council on Monday.

The issue was raised by Shobha Fadanvis (BJP).

"White paper would be issued on the deaths of 5,845 children in the state (in last one year)," Gaikwad said.

Talking on the issue, health minister Suresh Shetty said that transport facility would be provided to ferry the pregnant women from home to the hospital.

Shetty also said the government was ready to form a committee of local MLAs to monitor the condition of children in Melghat, which is infamous for malnutrition deaths.

"Janani-Shishu Suraksha Yojana (mother-child safety scheme) would be implemented and a total of Rs 19.7 crore would be earmarked for it, so as to prevent malnutrition cases," he said.
