Major haul of illegal arms and ammunition in Manipur

Police and security forces seize 151 SLR rifles, 65 INSAS rifles

In a significant breakthrough, Manipur Police, in a joint operation with Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), the Indian Army, and Assam Rifles, recovered a massive cache of illegal arms, ammunition, and explosives during coordinated search operations across five valley districts in the intervening night of June 13 and 14.

On receiving specific intelligence inputs about hidden stockpiles of weapons in various locations on the outskirts of the valley districts, simultaneous raids were launched. The successful operation led to the seizure of 328 firearms, including:

151 SLR rifles
65 INSAS rifles
73 other rifles
12 LMGs
6 AK-series rifles
5 carbine guns
2 MP5 guns
2 Amogh rifles
6 pistols
1 AR-15
2 flare guns
1 mortar

The joint teams also recovered a staggering quantity of ammunition and war-like stores, including:

591 assorted magazines
Over 10,600 rounds of ammunition (including SLR, INSAS, .303, AK, Amogh, and 9mm)
10 grenades
3 lathodes
7 detonators
3 parachute signals

A statement issued by the Director General of Police, Manipur, Imphal said, “This major operation underscores the unwavering commitment of Manipur Police and security forces in their ongoing mission to restore peace, maintain law and order, and safeguard lives and property across the state.”

Commending the coordinated efforts, Manipur DGP, Rajeev Singh commended the coordinated efforts and reaffirmed the force’s dedication to continued vigilance.

He urged citizens to remain alert and report any suspicious activities or information regarding illegal arms to the nearest police station or the Central Control Room.

Manipur has been reeling under strife since the ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities broke out in May 2023.
