MCD seals 38 commercial establishments in east Delhi

Monitored by the supreme court appointed committees

Acting against illegal commercial establishments, the MCD on Monday sealed 38 units in east Delhi, a drive undertaken following a directive from the Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee.

The 38 shops in Madhu Vihar in Sahadara South zone, which came into existence after February 2007, were targeted as the Master Plan for Delhi-2021 only allows establishments older than that in the area, officials said.

According to the MCD, the sealing drive will also continue tomorrow.

"In a meeting with residents of Madhu Vihar last month, we had asked them to file undertakings for their establishments. Those who are able to show proof that their establishments are older than February 8, 2007 are being spared," an MCD official said.

MCD Shahdara (South) Zone officials went to Madhu Vihar this morning along with a large posse of police personnel. Locals said there was some resistance against the sealing drive and some people were briefly held.

If in the process of sealing, some establishments which are older than February 2007 have also been sealed then the owners can approach to MCD and their properties will be de-sealed, the officials said.
