Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray today met chief minister Ashok Chavan to express his party's concern for lakhs of 10th class pass students whose fate is in limbo after the Bombay High Court struck down the government's 'best of five' system for admissions in Std XI on grounds that it was "discriminatory".

"We apprised the chief minister that it was wrong to keep the sword of uncertainty hanging over the students' heads," an MNS leader, who accompanied Raj at the meeting held at Chavan's official residence 'Varsha' in Malabar Hill, said.

Chavan informed the MNS delegation that the Government has decided to approach the Supreme Court after the Bombay High Court struck down the 'best of five' system.

Under this system, marks obtained in five subjects out of total six were to be counted in SSC Board's Std 10th marks, leaving out the subject with lowest marks.

However, the High Court described it as discriminatory.

Chavan said the government will try to start admissions to Std XI from July 10, adding around 16 lakh SSC students had studied as per the best of five systems, he said.

The Maharashtra government is of the view that marking systems of ICSE and CBSE boards were more liberal, which puts students from the State Board (SSC) at a disadvantage, and says that the best of five systems is meant to "bring uniformity".
