As many as 2000 high schools and nearly 200 higher secondary schools in Madhya Pradesh do not have a building of their own forcing the students to study in different shifts, Directorate of Public Instructions (DPI) deputy director, P R Tiwari said here on Friday.

"At present there are 6028 high and higher secondary schools in Madhya Pradesh and among them nearly 2000 high schools and 200 higher secondary schools do not have building of their own," said Tiwari.
A proposal worth Rs 2000 crore was forwarded to the centre for constructing additional rooms and create necessary infrastructure for these schools, he added.

"However, this does not mean that these schools are running under the sky or a tree, but they are being run in different shifts in the existing schools," Tiwari clarified.

This situation has aroused due to the upgradation of schools from middle to high and from high to higher secondary, he said adding as per the norms, there should be one classroom for every 45 students.

The primary and middle schools, however, are far better in the state as barring few rest of these schools have proper infrastructure.

"Last year, we had sanctioned construction of 24,000 rooms at primary and middle level to provide classrooms to the school children," Rajya Shiksha Kendra (RSK) Commissioner, Manoj Jhalani said.
