GN Bureau | May 14, 2010

Saroj Pandey, a 42-year-old Bharatiya Janata Party leader, figures in the Limca Book of Records for creating a national record: she is the first woman to simultaneously hold three elected positions – mayor, member of the Chhattisgarh assembly and member of parliament. The triple honour, however, was only for a fortnight, May 16-30, 2009.

She was elected mayor of Durg in 1999 and re-elected in 2004. She won the assembly elections from Vaishali Nagar on December 8, 2008 and got elected to the Lok Sabha from Durg on May 16. A spinster, Saroj is now a member of the Lok Sabha. She has done MSc in Child Development from Bhilai.

Her bio-data on the Lok Sabha website says she is also awaiting her name to figure in the Guinness Book for holding the record. By the way, she also holds the record of having the longest term of 10 years as a mayor of Durg.
