MPCC authorises Sonia to choose chief

She will also choose the Mumbai Cong chief

A one line resolution authorising AICC president Sonia Gandhi to elect the new Maharashtra and Mumbai unit Congress chiefs was passed at a meeting of newly elected district Congress committee presidents and PCC delegates.

The resolution was moved by South Central Mumbai MP Eknath Gaikwad.

Apart from the state and Mumbai presidents, the meeting resolved that Gandhi take the final decision regarding appointment of executive committee office-bearers, Pradesh Election Committee and AICC members.

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Manikrao Thakre proposed a resolution congratulating Sonia on her re-election as AICC chief for the fourth consecutive time.

Union Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh was the only union minister present at the meeting. Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, Revenue Minister Narayan Rane, Forest Minister Patangrao Kadam, former Chief Minister Shivajirao Patil-Nilangekar, former state unit president and Legislative council chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh were also among the leaders present on the occasion.

Today was the last day of filing of nomination for posts.

Election if any is scheduled for September 17.

Pradesh Returning Officer G S Charak said he will submit the resolutions to the High Command.

The decision to convene this meeting was taken at an informal meeting of the state leadership yesterday.
