No letting in water cuts till Aug 15

BMC says water level in city's six lakes not enough to cater to city's needs

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) today said the 15 per cent water cut across the city has been extended till August 15 due to scanty rainfall.

"Water level in the six lakes is not sufficient in comparison to the city's consumption. In a review meeting today it has been decided to extend the water cut till August 15," BMC commissioner Swadhin Kshatriya told reporters here.

The corporation had in June last year imposed a 15 per cent water cut for residents and a 30 per cent water cut for commercial users.

"Presently there is 2,42,930 million litres water in all the six lakes. The level should be over 8,00,000 million litres," a civic official said.

The decision to extend the water cut was taken due to scanty rainfall, the commissioner said adding the situation would be reviewed again on August 15 on whether to continue the water cut or withdraw it.
