In response to a bunch of petitions challenging 'best of five' rule, the Bombay High Court today said that Maharashtra will not start admission process for Std XI without its permission.

The results of SSC (state board) examination for Std X are yet to be declared and the admission process for Std XI will start thereafter.

In February this year, the state issued a government resolution (GR) which said that for admission to Std XI, marks obtained in any five subjects -- out of six -- in Std X exams would be taken into account.

An SSC pass-out student, therefore, will be able to choose five subjects in which he/she has got better marks.

But a few parents, whose children have taken ICSE Board Examination for Std X, have challenged the GR, demanding that the same facility should be provided for ICSE pass-outs too.

Division bench of Justices J N Patel and S C Dharmadhikari today gave the SSC board more time -- till next week -- to file reply, but made it clear that "admission process will not start till you seek the court's permission".

"Why the same facility is not available to ICSE students?" the court asked, adjouring hearing till June 18.
