Emphasising on the need for women empowerment, President Pratibha Patil today expressed concern over skewed sex ratio in states like Punjab.

In Punjab, the male-female ratio is 1000:857 which is very low. This imbalance may lead to law and order problem.

There would not be enough girls for marriage, she said.

The President was speaking at the concluding ceremony of fourth Kaku Nana memorial festival held in the memory of late MP Kesharbai Kshirsagar and her husband late Sonajirao.

She said only because women were allowed to take part in the sports like wrestling, more golds could be won in the ongoing Commonwealth Games.

Patil said it was former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who sowed the seeds of 'Green Revolution' by taking the decision of not importing grains.

To measure the development of any community, first of all it is seen how much progress has been made by the women and then the strategies are devised, she said.

Patil's husband Devisingh Shekhawat, Maharashtra Governor K Shankarnarayan and BJP leader Gopinath Munde were among those present on the occasion.

Patil also flagged off the 'Ayurmangalam project' that would be run by the Zilla Parishad for the sugarcane workers, who are a predominant force in Beed.
