Private telecom players to be under CAG scanner

New clause being added in the licence terms and conditions

The private telecom operators will have to now open up their accounts for audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India.

A new clause is being added in the licence terms and conditions to facilitate the CAG's inspection of the account books of the telecom operators. The enabling clause will also be incorporated in the agreements the Department of Telecom is signing to roll out 3G and BWA (Broadband Wireless Auctions) licences.

According to P&T director general of audit R P Singh, the CAG has to check accounts to verify the correctness of the gross revenue of all the private service providers on a regular basis to ensure they do not underpay charges for spectrum use to the government.
