Puducherry makes rain water harvesting compulsory

Rules amended to make RWH integral part of new buildings

The Puducherry building bye-laws and zoning regulations 1972 has been amended to make rainwater harvesting compulsory for construction of new residential or commercial buildings and educational and health institutions.

The amendment was made to meet growing public demand for supplying adequate water, provide protection against drought and to ensure reuse or recycling of domestic waste water for appropriate purposes after primary, secondary and tertiary treatment, a notification of the housing wing of the chief secretariat said on Friday.

The notification prescribed the various steps to be taken for conservation, storage and reuse of rainwater and also for recharging of groundwater and reuse of waste water.
