The total approximate earnings of Indian Railways on originating basis during April 1- May 31 2010 were Rs. 14714.04 crore compared to Rs. 13710.66 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 7.32 per cent.

According to railway officials, the total goods earnings have gone up from Rs. 9333.48 crore during April 1- May 31 2009 to Rs. 10004.02 crore during April 1- May 31 2010, an increase of 7.18 per cent.

The total passenger revenue earnings during first two months of the financial year 2010-11 were Rs. 4119.37 crore compared to Rs. 3831.02 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 7.53 per cent.

The revenue earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs. 420.97 crore during April-May 2010 compared to Rs. 397.28 crore during the same period last year, an increase of 5.96 per cent.

The total approximate number of passengers booked during April-May 2010 were 1273.93 million compared to 1203.51 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 5.85 per cent. In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked during April-May 2010 were 634.07 million and 639.86 million compared to 600.59 million and 602.92 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 5.57 per cent and 6.13 per cent respectively.
