Railways clarifies on trainwreck expenditure on flights

It was alleged that officials spent Rs 11.23 lakh flying to get files cleared by railway minister

The Railway Ministry has said it is misleading to suggest that its officials incurred Rs 11 lakh just to fly down to get files cleared by the Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Officials travel for various purposes and "as and when so warranted by the exigencies of official work", Railway spokesman Anil Kumar Saxena said late last night.

It was reported yesterday that Railways had incurred Rs 11,23,550 to fly five officials between Delhi and Kolkata to meet Banerjee.

Incidentally, the Railway Minister had said in Parliament last week that her absence from Delhi has not affected the functioning of her ministry whose performance was the best "in last 50 years".
