A group of social activists lead by Arvind Kejriwal and former IPS officer Kiran Bedi has said that the V K Shunglu committee, appointed by the prime minister to probe corruption allegations in the conduct of commonwealth games (CWG), is eyewash.

According to the group, the committee cannot do much as it has no powers to summon records and persons under the law.

The activists said that in a scenario when the agencies such as the central vigilance commission and comptroller and auditor general of India are finding it difficult enquire cases, it is unrealistic to expect anything substantial from Shunglu Committee. 

“Shunglu has been given the status of Supreme Court judge. That does not define his powers. It only defines  his perks. Now he would be entitled to as big a house as a Supreme Court judge, he would be entitled to as big a car, as many number of servants, as much salary and as big a pension as a Supreme Court judge. How does it help the country?” said Kejriwal, adding that none of the investigating agencies involved in probing corruption cases in CWG, is focusing on the role of politicians.

The activists have demanded setting up of a single agency on the lines of Lokayukta to investigate all the CWG related cases which should be independent from government interference.
