Sweeping changes promised in AAP manifesto for Delhi

Released on Wednesday, AAP's manifesto promised Jan Lokpal on top of its agenda while aiming to bring overall changes in the corrupt system

GN Bureau | November 20, 2013

After asking people to give their suggestions over a couple of months, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the new kids on the blocks who have taken the campaigning by storm, released its manifesto for Delhi on Wednesday (November 20) afternoon.

According to the party’s manifesto, it is committed to passing the Delhi Jan Lokpal Bill within 15 days if it forms a government. All public servants will come under the purview of jan lokpal.

The party, now rocked by allegations by former mentor turned baiter Anna Hazare of misusing funds meant for India Against Corruption for election campaigning, also says it will demand for full statehood to Delhi. This, the party says, would ensure the municipal corporations of Delhi (MCD), Delhi development authority (DDA) and Delhi Police are directly under the Delhi government.

In other means to devolve power to people, the manifesto promises that decisions about development in any locality will be taken by mohalla sabhas (local committees), payments for all public infrastructure work – such as construction of roads, pavement– will be released only once the work is approved by these local committees. These mohalla sabhas will also monitor functioning of local school, primary health centres, ration shops etc.
