TDP, Congress lock horns in Tirupati over Sonia ghat

Non-bailable arrest warrant for TDP protestors for building mock memorial for Sonia Gandhi

GN Bureau | October 17, 2013

Sonia Ghat, the pseudo memorial for the AICC president Sonia Gandhi built in protest against the Telangana decision, is becoming the cause for a major tussle between Congress and the Telugu Desham Party (TDP) in the temple town of Tirupati.

A non-bailable case was registered against three persons, believed to be the activists of the TDP, for allegedly being behind the protest memorial. Seeing this as a deliberate move by the TDP to taint Sonia Gandhi's image in public, a Congress leader lodged a complaint with the police.Based on the complaint of the leader Rambhupal Reddy, the police slapped the non-bailable case on the three TDP activists. The TDP quickly retaliated by threatening to come up with more Sonia Ghats in all the Seemandhra districts.

TDP’s senior leader from Ananthapur Payyavula Kesav dared the Congress and the police to foist similar cases in all the Seemandhra districts.

The controversy also received a fresh twist with leaders of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) calling the complainant as a traitor of Samaikhyandhra and threatening to boycott him.

Three days ago, the pro-united stated protesters constructed the Sonia Ghat in the Sankarambadi area of Tirupati. They claimed that it is their way of hitting back at the AICC chief for her devious ways to bury the Seemandhra interests for short-term political gains.

The protesters even observed three days of mourning to step up pressure on the UPA. Struggling to take the insult in their stride, infuriated Congressmen retaliated the next day by organising a mock funeral of TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu. The Congressmen eventually demolished the Sonia Ghat.
