TN legislative council gets presidential nod

14 years after it was abolished, TN gets its legislative council back

President Pratibha Patil has given her assent to a bill passed by Parliament for establishing the legislative council in Tamil Nadu, 14 years after it was abolished.

The act was notified in the gazette after the Presidential assent.

The council would have 78 members, of whom 26 would be elected by the Tamil Nadu Assembly and 12 would be nominated by the governor, an official release said.

The rest would be elected from constituencies created for graduates, teachers and local bodies.

With this, the process of establishing a legislative council, abolished by AIADMK founder M G Ramachandran in 1986 when he was chief minister, has been set in motion.

The Tamil Nadu government has appointed a senior official of the assembly A M P Jamaludeen as Officer on Special Duty for works related to forming the Council.
