UNICEF, with the support of the Indian government, has launched an online campaign ‘Awaaz do' to mobilise the society to speak up for more than eight million children currently out of school in the country

The campaign will be a platform for the combined voices of the government, the corporate world, the media and individuals to ensure every child is in school.

“UNICEF is working with the government of India to outline a roadmap for implementing Right to Education Act (RTE) at the national and state level. However, the success of this act is also largely dependent on collective actions,” said Urmila Sarkar, UNICEF’s chief of education.

RTE act, which gurantees quality elementary education for all, will benefit millions of children.  It also focuses on the quality of teaching and learning which requires accelerated efforts and substantial reforms.

The campaign will use technology and social networking to get citizens actively involved and demand the rights for children.

UNICEF celebrity ambassador Priyanaka Chopra and human resource development (HRD) minister Kapil Sibal have signed up as champions to garner support for the campaign.
