YSR's native Kadapa to get his name

Kadapa will hence forth be known as YSR district

The Andhra Pradesh government today gave its nod for renaming Kadapa district as "YSR district" after former Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

Rajasekhara Reddy, who was killed in a helicopter crash in the Nallamala forest range on September 2 last year, hailed from Kadapa district.

The Congress government initially wanted to rename Kadapa as Y S Rajasekhara Reddy Kadapa district.

"Since the name is too long and also since the former chief minister is most popular as YSR, the cabinet decided to rename Kadapa as YSR district," information and tourism minister J Geeta Reddy told newspersons at the end of the cabinet meeting here.

The district in-charge minister Galla Aruna Kumari suggested that the name be shortened to YSR district and the cabinet, chaired by chief minister K Rosaiah, approved the new name, she said.

A notification in this regard will soon be issued.

The Cabinet also decided to commemorate YSR's birth anniversary on July 8 on a grand scale across the state.

"Since the Cabinet decided in principle to celebrate the birth anniversary, it will be a state event," Geeta Reddy said.
