'Banking facility to be made to villages with 2000 population'

Bihar dy CM says state govt was making efforts to open one branch of a commercial bank in every panchayat

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Thursday told the state legislative council that the banking facility would soon be made available in 5934 villages with population of more than 2000 and bank representatives would be appointed in 9213 villages by March end this year.

Replying to a short notice question of BJP MLA Baidyanath Prasad, Modi, who hold charge of Finance department gave this information to the members in the Upper house.

He said this system was being implemented in villages following the consent of Central government and the business correspondent (bank representative) would have a small machine in their hands and visit the village for opening of accounts of people through biometric finger prints.

State government was making concerted efforts for ensuring opening of one branch of a commercial bank in every panchayats within stipulated period of October 2012, Modi said.

Earlier opposition RJD members shouted anti-government slogans against Nitish Kumar government for its alleged failure to ensure procurement of paddy despite reports of bumper crops during the last kharif season.

Earlier the state minister Bijay Kumar Choudhary in reply to a short notice question of RJD MLC Naval Kishore Yadav told the House that action was taken against owners of more than 200 vehicles in Patna district in 2011 and a sum of Rs 3 lakh was realised from them as fine.
