Law minister M Veerappa Moily today met prime minister Manmohan Singh in the wake of solicitor general Gopal Subramanium tendering his resignation over the appointment of a private counsel to appear for the government in a 2G-related case in the supreme court.

Moily, who was in Bangalore during the weekend, reached Delhi last night. Though there was no official word yet on the meeting, it is learnt that he discussed the issue with the prime minister.

Sources said Subramanium (53), who has been appearing for the government in the 2G related cases in the supreme court, said it was "unfair" that the law ministry chose to appoint Rohington Nariman as counsel for union of India to appear in a PIL by an ngo against telecom minister Kapil Sibal without his consent.

Slighted by the appointment of the counsel without taking him into confidence, Subramanium had sent his resignation to the prime minister on Saturday.

The prime minister is understood to have asked Subramanium not to press his resignation.
